    FG to sanction trade associations over food price hike

    Members of trade associations guilty of anti-competitive practices, indiscriminate and irrational hike of food prices will henceforth be sanctioned by the Federal Government, through the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.

    This was disclosed by FCCPC CEO, Babatunde Irukera, at a forum organised by the commission to discuss fair food prices on Tuesday, July 18. This is coming after President Bola Tinubu declared food security as a national emergency last week.

    Irukera stated that the sanctions became necessary as some trade unions have constituted cartels to engage in anti-competitive practices that have led to price gouging of basic food items.

    He said;

    “We will continue to monitor the market, and where we find that prices are excessive or find exploitative conduct, or find that consumers are being taken advantage of, we will intervene. One of the ways of intervening is unlocking the bottlenecks.

    “That is what I just said, associations that come together to determine at what price beans should be sold, associations that come together to decide that nobody in a particular market should take yam, beans or rice from any other person except their members, we will proceed against them.

    “Competition regulation and consumer protection is not only to regulate the big companies. It is not only to regulate the formal sector. It is also to regulate the informal sector. In a place like Nigeria, it is even more critical to find a strategy to regulate the informal sector because, at the end of the day the vast majority of our economy is informal.”

    2023 WWC: Bonus impasse won’t distract Super Falcons – Waldrum

    Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum has said his players will not be affected by the bonus saga with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

    There were reports the Super Falcons will boycott their opening fixture against Canada at the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup due to the backlog of salaries owed to them by the NFF.

    Waldrum recently engaged in a war of words with the NFF over team selection and lack of support.

    The American, however, said the team is firmly focused on the task ahead and will not allow anything to distract them from achieving their target at the World Cup.

    “We will be there. All of that transpired before we came and I think the team, once we all arrived here, have just focused on Canada,” Waldrum told Reuters after training on Wednesday.

    “We met about it the first night we arrived, and at that point, we all just agreed not to continue to discuss it, not let it be out there and that we’re here to do a job.”

    The Super Falcons will start their campaign in Australia and New Zealand against Canada on Friday.

    Church divided after polygamous Bishop allegedly sent n*des to his nephew’s wife

    A Zimbabwean church is at the brink of splitting after its bishop allegedly sent n*de pictures and proposed love to his nephew’s wife.

    It was gathered that Bishop Lyphet Matenda Mugaviri of the Zion Christian Church Kumuka Kwavakafa Nhaudzashe asked for love from Olinda Mashavave, the wife of Lesly Mugaviri, who is his elder brother’s son. He reportedly wanted Olinda to be his fourth lover, as he already has three wives.

    Olinda and her husband Lesly who were infuriated by this, leaked the chats and Bishop Mugaviri’s intimate pictures throughout the church’s WhatsApp groups.

    H-Metro spoke to Jonathan Chauke, one of the elders of the church, who confirmed the incident. He revealed that the church is divided as some members want the Bishop to stay while others want him packing.

    He said;

    “We spoke with the bishop after this incident and we advised him to step down. However, within the committee, others insisted that we should forgive him.

    “He should repent and avoid causing confusion. Some sections are disappointed over the way the man of cloth behaved and we need to take proper action. Another key challenge is that we didn’t have a signed constitution, that’s why he is manipulating the system.”

    The publication also reached out to Bishop Mugaviri, who deflected all questions to his church advisor Kufakunesu Mubhoyi. Mubhoyi responded by saying;

    “The church may split because the royal family is fighting for power and the desire to control the church. As the church, we advised them to resolve this issue as a family without affecting the church’s activities.

    “This issue started as a family issue and the family should continue to resolve its problems. Another critical issue is that the aggrieved muroora should personally come forward with the matter, we cannot just rely on downloaded chats and we are not even seeing her face.”
