A tragedy occurred Wednesday in the Olujoda area of Ado-Ekiti, the capital of the state of Ekiti, after a 45-year-old carpenter was killed by a mob who thought he was an armed robber.
According to reports, Olujoda has recently witnessed a series of robberies, which has led residents to be suspicious of any movement.
Eyewitnesses report that young people in the area saw the deceased roaming the streets, which made them suspicious of him. They thought he was one of the robbers who might have attacked them in the past, and then jumped on him, beat him with dangerous weapons until he fell into a coma. Later he was taken to hospital where his death was confirmed.
His grieving wife Yemi told reporters that her husband had told her that he was going to Olujoda because of a contract. She demands justice for her late husband.
“My husband told reporters that he was going to Olujoda to get a contract. I was very surprised to hear that he was killed on suspicion that he was wandering. The question to ask is: Did they see a dangerous weapon on him? Why couldn’t they take him to the person who hired him to do the job, to find out his true identity? This was a gross injustice and the perpetrators must be held accountable”.
The spokesman for the state police command, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident and said when he was contacted that an investigation had been launched into the matter. Abutu said some people had been arrested in connection with the incident.
