Olamide is an artist who came into the game relatively unknown. A one-man mopol himself with a unique style of rendering his indigenous rap music.
Born Olamide Adedeji, and professionally known Olamide Baddo. In 2011, released his debut studio ‘Rapsodi’ which was widely accepted while still signed with Coded Tunes.
Some opined that if Dagrin was still in the game perhaps Olamide wouldn’t have made the mark on the game but I would rather say that each man with his unique style of delivery, so he kept his cool, remained focus and précised.
Before other rappers who choose to deliver the rap music in their indigenous style too, we could talk of Eldee de Don and Eedris Abdul Karim etc who served us hot both in English and Yoruba.
Then came the King Dagrin, God bless his soul, who literarily changed the Indigenous Rap style of music.
Still talking about the indigenous rap style, Olamide made his mark for all to see just like his predecessors and he also believes that we rise by lifting others and became
the first Nigerian to sign an endorsement deal with Ciroc.
In follow up to the successful release of his first studio album, he released a follow-up studio album ‘YBNL’ under his label imprint YBNL Nation which he founded to also help and groom other rappers who do not have the platform to rise.
YBNL Nation is an acronym for Yahoo Boy No Laptop {YBNL} Nation founded in 2012
Upon the creation of YBNL Nation, the label has grown from strength to strength, it remains one of the undisputed best 3 record labels in Nigeria and has to see the signature of Olamide, DJ Enemoney, Fire Boy DML, B Banks, Young John, Lil Kesh, Viktoh, Chinko Ekun, Adekunle Gold, Xino, Davolee, Lyta, Picazo Rhap, Pelepele, Limericks.
All these names ring a bell in the industry and they have all made their marks in the industry with couple awards and albums to their credits under YBNL Nation.
However, one thing is worthy of note about all the YBNL signee both former and current artists is that majority of them belong to the same genre of music as performed by Olamide Baddo himself which most refers to as street music.
Adekunle Gold and Fire Boy DML do something different and a contemporary kind of music that is in a way not in the same league with Baddo which I believe in my opinion is the reason why they are the most successful.
Not disrespecting the grind of other former and current artists though, but these two have waxed stronger lyrically in their deliveries and always giving back to back hit.
Adekunle Gold and Fire Boy DML are a clear indication that YBNL should focus more on signing artist who does not literally do street music but contemporary and other genres of music and the label will record more success in the industry.
