New Manchester United loan-signing, Wout Weghorst has revealed why he opted to wear Alex Telles shirt.
The striker said he feels good wearing the number 27 shirt for Manchester United.
The Red Devils officially announced Weghorst’s loan transfer on Friday, January 13. He becomes Erik ten Hag’s first signing of the January transfer window.
The Dutch forward will stay at Old Trafford till the end of the season.
Weghorst played four matches for the Dutch side at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, scoring two goals.
He told MUTV, “Of course, I looked into the ones that are free or available. Two and seven will make nine, of course – a striker’s number. “I had a feeling about it.”
“Of course, when I came here, I heard that it was Alex [Telles]’s number, he got loaned out now,” Weghorst added.
“I first had to ask him if that was okay, so I said that was, for me, important and then, in the end, there was no problem so thanks to him also. So yeah, I go for the 27 and actually it’s just because I had a good feeling with it.”
Manchester United have brought in the Netherlands international as temporary replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo who exited the club back in November.
Ronaldo’s contract with the Old Trafford outfit was terminated in November after the Portuguese superstar angrily granted an explosive interview to popular British broadcaster Piers Morgan.
During the interview, Cristiano Ronaldo lambasted United boss, Erik ten Hag, the club’s hierarchy and his fellow players.
The decision to bring in Weghorst this January has been met with a lot of criticism from pundits who feel the Burnley front man is not the calibre of striker Manchester United should be signing.
