A man suspected to be mentally deranged was beaten to a pulp by angry residents for allegedly molesting a woman in Osogbo, Osun State.

The incident happened around 10am on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, along Gbongan/Osogbo road.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect allegedly poured an alcoholic drink on the woman’s face before he slipped his hands under her dress and started fondling her while she struggled feebly to open her eyes.

They furthe claimed that the man allegedly used a ring and attempted to penetrate the woman’s private part when she screamed for help.

The incident drew the attention of passers-by and they descended on him, beat him to pulp, until his face was left disfigured.

It was learnt that while beating him, two mobile phones and an undisclosed amount of cash was found on the suspect, who later identified himself as Olu.

A passer-by simply identified as Jide said, who gave an account of the incident told  Punch that some policemen arrived at the scene and rescued the suspect.

“The incident happened around 10am. The man looked like someone suffering insanity and he had a bottle of Captain Jack  in his hand and poured a little quantity into a cup. He then splashed the alcohol on the woman’s face. Immediately the alcohol hit her face, the woman could not see well again and the suspect held her and put his hand under the woman’s dress and began to fondle her,” he narrated.

“That act made people to immediately rush to the scene and free the victim and start beating him. Two mobile phones and some amount of money was found on him.  Some police operatives later arrived at the scene and took him away in their vehicle.”

Many people in the area alleged that the man has been pretending to be unstable.

Another resident who pleaded anonymity said the police need to investigate the man because he usually returns to a bush around Owode-Ede in the evening after roaming about the streets to beg for alms.
