Chelsea boss, Frank Lampard has explained why he decided to keep Kai Havertz on the bench during Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final first leg.
Goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio have put the Spanish giants in control ahead of the second leg fixture at Stamford Bridge.
Havertz is the Blues’ leading scorer this season, with seven goals in the Premier League and two more in the Champions League.
Lampard, who was recently hired to take the team through the remainder of the season, said he wanted to utilise the extra speed and dribbling ability of Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix.
The former England international said he wanted to match Real Madrid’s star-studded midfield.
“So I felt that we’re strong in that [frontline] area of the pitch with Felix and Sterling.
“So it wasn’t an easy choice for me,” he said.
