Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher slammed the club over their recent transfer decisions.
Caragher is of the opinion that the Reds should not have signed the likes of Cody Gakpo from Ajax in January over Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham.
After months of speculations about the Reds attempting to sign Bellingham, most recent reports say that Jurgen Klopp’s side is no longer interested in bringing the young English midfielder, who is valued for £130 million to Anfield.
And his old club’s decision has baffled Carragher, who feels that the Reds are in dire need of a midfielder to prepare themselves to challenge for the title next season.
“How can the club suddenly baulk at a valuation exceeding £100m? They know that is the going rate for the best in class,” the former England international wrote in the Telegraph.
“What really infuriates me is the red herring that Liverpool have reached the conclusion Bellingham is too expensive on the basis of Klopp’s rebuild being bigger than initially thought.
“Then Cody Gakpo signed for £40m in January, even though the side was crying out for more midfield energy. Gakpo has made a promising start. I like him. But now it is even more baffling that another striker was prioritized.”
The former England international believes that most Liverpool fans would have loved the club to add the money used in buying Gakpo to the £90m bid made for Bellingham and sign the Borussia Dortmund star for £130m instead.
“This is the first time I have openly questioned Liverpool’s transfer policy during the Klopp era,” he added.
