Victor Osimhen has so far had a huge impact for his club, Napoli this season.
Osimhen, who has drawn many comparisons with the likes of Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, is leading Napoli to win this season’s Serie A title due to his goals and performances.
The Nigerian prodigy is currently the leading goal scorer in Serie A with 21 goals.
His team is one match away from lifting the Serie A title after beating Juventus 1-0 on Sunday, thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Giacomo Raspadori.
Napoli are currently 17 points clear on top of the Serie A table with 78 points after 31 matches.
Luciano Spalletti’s side could clinch the Serie A title next weekend if they beat Salernitana and Lazio fail to win at Internazionale.
After Napoli’s victory over Juventus, Osimhen took to his Twitter handle on Monday morning to send a clear message to Napoli fans, suggesting that it is their turn to win the Serie A title.
The Super Eagles attacker tweeted: “Dear Neapolitans,You Have Waited Long Enough! Now It’s Your Turn!!!”
Osimhen’s impact at Napoli cannot be compared with other Nigerian footballers playing in Europe’s top five leagues this term.
The 24-year-old is currently the only Nigerian footballer in Europe’s top five leagues that is leading his team to glory.
Apart from Osimhen, the other two Nigerian football stars that are doing very well for their club sides in Europe are Lorient’s Terem Moffi and Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman.
Moffi has so far scored 16 goals in 27 matches so far for Lorient, but his team currently sits in the 11th position on the Serie A table with 45 points from 32 games.
Ademola, on the other hand, has scored 15 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions for Atalanta. His team are currently in 7th position on the Serie A table with 49 points from 30 matches.
DAILY POST reports Osimhen’s huge influence at Napoli is coming amid the dearth of Nigerian superstars in Europe’s top five best leagues (EPL, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1).
Speaking with DAILY POST on the subject matter, Stanley Smart, an Abuja-based sports journalist said that he was not surprised with Osimhen’s impressive display for Napoli this season because the former Lille star is a player who worked hard in training.
He also suggested that Osimhen’s lifestyle is another reason he is doing very well for his club in Europe compared to other Nigerian stars.
“Well, I am not surprised by Osimhen’s brilliant performance for Napoli this season because he is a player who works hard during matches and training,” Smart said.
“He has really improved compared to last season at Napoli. He is a world-class striker. I wish him all the best and hope he continues to maintain and improve on his current level.
“Osimhen is arguably Nigeria’s best player in Europe this season, other Nigerian players in Europe are also trying, like Moffi, Chukwueze, Ademola, Kelechi and Iwobi, but none can be compared to what Osimhen has achieved this season.
“Apart from Osimhen and the few other players I mentioned earlier, it has not been easy for other Nigerian players in Europe this season, and this has to do with a lot of factors, including the personal lifestyle of these players, attitude in training and matches, psychology of the players, among others.
“He will surely win the Serie A with Napoli this season, and I hope he improves next season,” he added.
Osimhen joined Napoli for a club-record fee of €70 million from Lille in 2020.
