Argentina 2022 World Cup-winning captain, Lionel Messi, has won the 2023 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year.
Laureus World Sports Awards announced this via their Twitter handle on Monday.
The organisers explained that Messi bagged the award for leading Argentina to a historic third World Cup glory.
He defeated his PSG teammate and World Cup rival, Kylian Mbappe, NBA star Stephen Curry, legendary tennis player Rafael Nadal, Formula 1 star Max Verstappen Pole Vaulter Mondo Duplantis to clinch the prestigious award.
Messi was on ground to receive his award at the event which held in Paris on Monday.
Meanwhile, Nigerian track star, Tobi Amusan lost her category; Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award to 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz.
Eileen Gu won the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year category, while Catherine Debrunner walked home with the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability award.
