The Federal Government has condemned the fatal attack of a Nigerian national, Chibuike Chukwuneke, by his Chinese employer in the Philippines.

The incident happened at Orlacson Street, 6014, Mandaue City where the victim was allegedly beaten to death by six thugs contracted by his Chinese employer, after an altercation.

According to reports, the thugs – a group of Chinese Nationals – who tortured Chibuike, tied his hands and mouth and subsequently beat him to death.

The Philippine National Police has filed murder charges against the six Chinese persons who are reportedly on the run.

A statement signed by Francisca Omayuli, spokesperson of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Thursday, October 26, 2023, said Emmanuel, whose employment was terminated for allegedly lodging his girlfriend in official accommodation in Cebu, Philippines, had a disagreement with his employer that led to the torture which resulted his death.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria has received with sadness and grave concern, reports of the tragic death of a Nigerian national in the Philippines on 21st October, 2023,” the statement read.

The victim, identified as Mr. Chibuike Emmanuel Chukwuneke allegedly died of complications arising from the torture inflicted on him by thugs contracted by his Chinese employer, after an altercation.

According to the official Police report obtained by the Nigerian Embassy in the Philippines, argument ensued when the late Mr. Chukwuneke demanded that his salary be paid on a pro-rata basis, following the termination of his employment by his employer, who accused him of contravening the terms of his contract by lodging his girlfriend in his official accomodation.

While there is no justification for the deadly attack on the deceased, the Federal Government calls on Nigerians living in the country to remain calm and law-abiding, while the Philippine authorities continue with investigations.

In line with the diaspora component of the 4-Ds Foreign Policy strategy, the Federal Government of Nigeria is committed to ensuring the protection of the fundamental human rights of all Nigerians wherever they live.

To this end, the Nigerian Embassy will continue to follow up on the matter with relevant authorities, including the Philippines National Police (PNP) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, until the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The Federal Government of Nigeria seizes this opportunity to condole with the family and friends of late Mr. Chibuike Emmanuel Chukwuneke. May his soul rest in peace.”

The Philippines and the Chinese Nationals were reportedly angry that the deceased lodged his girlfriend, a Philippine citizen in his official accommodation.FG releases statement on Nigerian allegedly murdered by group of Chinese people in Philippines
