Brighton boss, Roberto De Zerbi has claimed his side lost 3-2 to Chelsea because of “three big mistakes”.
The Seagulls were unable to beat the Blues even though Conor Gallagher was sent off in the first half.
Enzo Fernandez and Levi Colwill gave the hosts a two-goal lead, before Brighton pulled one back through Facundo Buonanotte’s curling effort.
Chelsea restored their two-goal advantage from the penalty spot just after the hour mark, while Joao Pedro’s late header was a mere consolation.
De Zerbi, speaking to Sky Sports, said: “I think we played better than Chelsea, better than the last game in the Europa League, better than the Nottingham Forest game.
“But we made three big mistakes and we lost the game. We are very young but we are able to defend better in those situations.
“I am sorry because we deserved to make a point.”
