An Ondo High Court sitting in Akure has sentenced a 45-year-old man, Shuaibu Kalejaiye, to 45 years imprisonment, for attempting to kill his wife.
The trial judge, Justice Adeyemi Fasanmi, handed down the sentence on Kalejaiye on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, after he found him guilty of the attempted murder.
The court convicted Kalejaiye and sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment on count one and 25 years imprisonment on count two.
The convict was said to have committed the offences on December 5, 2019, at about 10:30am at Ayeka, New Site, via Okitipupa, Ondo State.
He was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on an attempt to kill one Adeola Olabisi Kalejaiye contrary to Section 320 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37, Vol.1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
To prove its case, the prosecution led by State Counsel, Helen Falowo Esq, called three witnesses and tendered three exhibits during the trial.
In its defence, the defendant, Kalejaiye, and one other witness testified.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the crime.
According to the court, the prosecution proved the case against the defendant beyond reasonable doubt.
The judge also noted that the defendant did not show remorse for his crime.
“The court has considered the allocutus of the defence counsel, but the position of the law is binding on us all.
Fasanmi said that the evidence before the court showed that the defendant brutalized his wife and caused havoc to her body, by inflicting injuries all over her body.
