Former Napoli striker Antonio Floro Flores has warned fans against becoming too attached to some players in the club.
The 40-year-old, who made over 67 appearances during his playing days, was specifically speaking about the haste with which the club’s supporters and pundits are likening Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Marco van Basten and Diego Maradona respectively.
Both players were key to Napoli’s success last season as they claimed their first Serie A title in 33 years.
But Napoli have found it difficult to maintain the same level of performance this season.
Speaking on La Domenica Azzurra on OttoChannel-channel 16, Flores said, “It’s right for the fans to go to the stadium, I don’t agree with those who say we should desert.
“Napoli, at this moment, still needs the support of the fans. The shirt always counts and counts, perhaps in the future we should avoid becoming too attached to some players.
“After the Scudetto we were quick to compare Kvara to Maradona and Osimhen to Van Basten… Balance is always needed.”
Osimhen joined Napoli from Lille in 2020, but is set to leave the club at the end of the current season with top clubs in Europe lining up for his signature
