Lightning struck and killed two persons in Issele-Azagba community in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The incident happened during a torrential rainfall on Tuesday afternoon, July 2, 2024.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, some youths numbering about 13 were playing the game at Osemeke Primary School field in the community at about 6:30pm when lightning struck the players and their referee, killing two persons identified as Sunday (pictured) and Lucky.

One of the victims is said to be a Point of Service (POS) operator.

The third victim whose condition was critical, is said to have been admitted to a hospital in Asaba.

A youth leader in the community confirmed the incident on Wednesday.

“Lightning struck, electrocuting some of the boys playing football. Two of the boys lost their lives and others were shocked and are being attended to due to the shock. One in particular has been admitted to the hospital,” he said.

According to him, the deceased were non-indigenes of Issele Azagba but had been living in the community for many years.

He sympathised with the deceased and prayed that their souls rest in peace.

“As it is now most people have remained indoors as the rain is still falling,” he added.
