Greece manager, Ivan Jovanovic has suggested that his team defeated England 2-1 in the UEFA Nations League tie on Thursday because his players were inspired to play in George Baldock’s memory.
Recall that Baldock, a former Greece defender, was found dead in his swimming pool at his home in Greece on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old had left English football to sign for Greek club Panathinaikos in the summer transfer window.
However, his death was confirmed a day before Greece’s Nations League victory over the Three Lions at Wembley Stadium.
Greece defeated England, thanks to two-goal hero Vangelis Pavlidis.
Speaking after the game, Jovanovic said at his post-match interview:
“At such moments football comes second.
“The time he [Baldock] was with the team he made his mark and that was visible in the way the players played today.”
