Tragedy unfolded in Nibo, a community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday, October 20, as gunmen reportedly killed at least 16 people, mostly youths, in what is believed to be a cult-related clash.
Unconfirmed reports suggest the deadly incident stems from a violent conflict between rival cult groups in the area. A disturbing video circulating on social media shows the lifeless bodies of several individuals lying on the ground, further fueling concerns about escalating violence.
A Facebook user posted about the incident, warning residents to avoid the area: “Please avoid Nibo today. Many feared dead already. They said it’s a cult clash. Our youths are dying in their numbers.” the user wrote
Another user, Ifeyinwa Okeke, shared that the emergency ward at Amaku Teaching Hospital, Awka, was overwhelmed with victims from the attack. “Our emergency ward at Amaku Teaching Hospital, Awka is filled with victims from there. It was terrible,” she wrote.
As of the time of filing this report, state authorities have not yet commented on the tragic event.
