Former Senegalese star, Ferdinand Coly has named the countries he believes are capable of winning the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Nigeria is one of the countries that has been widely tipped to come home with the trophy this year having finished second last two years ago.

Nigeria lost to the host nation, Ivory Coast in the 2023 final with the Elephants winning 2-1 in the highly tensed encounter.

This time around, Coly told  Filgoal that It is very difficult to pick a particular nation as the favourite to win the tournament, adding that this can only be possible as the competition  advances.

He said that Morocco, apart from being number one team in Africa, according to FIFA ranking, also has the home advantage.

“So [Morocco] is the first candidate according to logic,” he said before mentioning Senegal, Egypt,  Algeria and Tunisia.

He further said that the likes of Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Cameroon cannot be ignored when picking favourite.

Speaking further, Coly noted that Cape Verde could also pull a surprise.

He said that he would not be surprised if any team among the eight or ten teams he mentioned wins the trophy in Morocco.

Nigeria are drawn in the Group C of the competition alongside the likes of Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania.

In preparation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Eagles and the Pharaohs of Egypt clashed in a friendly match on Tuesday night.

The Pharaohs beat Eric Chelle’s side 2-1 in the encounter.
