Reno Omokri has thrown shade at singer Davido while congratulating , Temilade Openiyi, famously known as Tems for emerging winner of the Best African Music Performance category at the 67th Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 2.
In a post shared on his Instagram page, Reno wrote;
‘’Congratulations, Tems, and thank you for bringing the Best African Music Performance Grammy back to Nigeria. It is so delightful that a proud Nigerian who always speaks well of her country has achieved the rare honour of being a double Grammy winner. We are happy for and with you, Tems. If only others can learn from you, they may have their own Grammy to boast of.”
In another post, Reno wrote;
”To Win a Grammy As a Nigerian Artiste, Associate With a Nigerian Flag, Not The Flag of a Colonial Oppressor, Otherwise Your Ambition Will Be in Shambles!”
”When you praise the flag and image of your country, Providence will raise your swag and visage to a Grammy!” he added
His post appears to be a direct shade at Davido who has the Belgium flag on his bio.
Reno knocked Davido in November 2024, for going on a US podcast to speak about the Nigerian government and the Nigerian economy. Davido was a guest on The Big Homies House where he stated that things are not ‘’cool back home” and advised black Americans against relocating to Nigeria.
“It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles. I am talking about the situation in the country. Now the exchange rate is messed up, a lot of stuffs are not going well. The economy is just not good enough. The oil price is too high. Imagine the country that produces oil, paying more for it than a country importing oil.
It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles. I do my part, I am an ambassador. When I go home and I am filming, I am not going to show the bad parts.”Davido has said on the podcast
Davido’s remarks sparked criticism from various quarters, including Reno who slammed him via his X handle. He said that Davido displayed ‘’ignorance and a lack of patriotism” with his statement.
