Following a dramatic 3-3 draw with Inter Milan in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick addressed the media with a composed yet passionate tone, defending his players and the team’s identity amidst a match full of twists, individual brilliance, and frustrating defensive lapses.

Barcelona were forced to claw their way back after conceding two early goals and a third from a set piece, but the resilience and attacking intent displayed by the Catalans were a clear indication that this squad is growing in confidence and character under Flick’s leadership.

“We found ourselves in a similar situation against Atlético in the Copa del Rey — if you remember. That’s football,” Flick opened his post-match press conference, referencing another comeback attempt that tested his players’ mentality and discipline.

The German manager remained resolute in his belief that Barcelona had delivered a stellar performance overall, despite the defensive setbacks. “I’m really proud of what the team showed today. We played an excellent match. Of course, the goals we conceded weren’t pleasant to watch — we’ll need to review and analyze them — but our approach, our identity, the way we played was fantastic.”

Barcelona’s strategy and high pressing created numerous chances, particularly in the second half. The electric atmosphere at the Olympic Stadium matched the intensity of the occasion, as both teams produced one of the most entertaining matches of the Champions League campaign.

“Everyone saw the quality of our performance — especially in a Champions League semi-final,” Flick continued. “Despite the poor start and conceding twice early, plus another goal from a set piece, the team responded well. We’ll need to defend better next Tuesday.”

Lamine Yamal was one of the standout players on the night. The 17-year-old was once again the engine behind Barcelona’s attacking momentum, scoring a goal and generating multiple chances down the right flank.

“Lamine was crucial in the first half,” Flick acknowledged. “He created a lot of chances and got the goal that sparked the comeback — he was absolutely key.”

With the return leg in Milan looming, Flick also hinted at potential reinforcements for the decisive clash. “There’s a possibility Balde and Lewandowski return for the second leg — maybe even sooner — but we’ll have to wait and assess.”

The injury to Jules Koundé added another layer of concern for Barcelona. The French defender limped off late in the match, further complicating Flick’s defensive options ahead of what promises to be a fiery return encounter at the San Siro.

“Yes, I’m very proud of this team. Playing every three days isn’t easy, and you could see that with Koundé’s injury,” Flick noted, emphasizing the grueling schedule his players are enduring. “We’ll go over everything in training tomorrow. But I have to highlight the team’s attitude, the commitment to our style, and the constant attacking intent. That’s what I appreciate most.”

Despite the draw, Barcelona showed a return to the identity that fans have longed to see — high tempo, fluid passing, and relentless pressure in attack. Flick believes that this philosophy must remain the backbone of their approach.

“I have nothing to criticize the players for,” he added. “They gave everything, and now they deserve rest. I’m proud of how they maintained our philosophy.”

Inter Milan, for their part, demonstrated why they are among Europe’s most consistent teams. Their tactical organization and clinical finishing were on full display, and Flick was quick to acknowledge the quality of the opposition.

“Inter is a very organized team — solid defensively, but also dangerous going forward,” he said. “We’re among the top four clubs in the world now, and for us, staying faithful to our identity is key. Our goal remains the final.”

The message from Flick was clear — Barcelona are not merely satisfied with competing at this stage. They are determined to win. The ambition is as high as ever, and the draw has only added fuel to their desire.

“We can be proud — this is a team that plays to dominate and win. And we did that today against a side that’s been building together for four or five years,” he concluded.

Now, all eyes turn to the return leg in Milan. With the tie finely poised, Barcelona will have to summon all their tactical discipline, mental strength, and attacking flair to overcome a formidable Inter Milan side on their own turf. Flick’s faith in his players remains unshaken — and with potential returns from injury and a deeper tactical analysis underway, Barcelona will head to the San Siro believing the final is still within their grasp.
