Two men tragically lost their lives after falling into a latrine pit in Bazabe Quarters, Albasu Local Government Area of Kano State, as confirmed by the State Fire Service on Sunday, June 22.

According to a statement from the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the incident occurred on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

The Takai Fire Station received a distress call at approximately 11:16 a.m. from an Inspector Auwalu reporting the emergency. Upon arriving at the scene, rescue personnel discovered that the first victim, 40-year-old Usman Muhammad, had entered the pit to retrieve his mobile phone, locally known as “Indon Kauye,” which had accidentally fallen in.

Muhammad became trapped and was unable to escape. A second man, identified as Ibrahim Inuwa, also around 40 years old, entered the pit in an attempt to rescue Muhammad. He managed to tie a rope around the first victim to prepare for extraction, but unfortunately, he then lost consciousness inside the pit.

“Both men were retrieved from the pit unconscious and were later confirmed dead,” the statement read.

The bodies were surrendered to SP Kabiru Magawata, the Divisional Police Officer of Albasu LGA, for further investigation. The State Fire Service has urged the public to avoid entering hazardous areas and recommended that residents always seek professional assistance in emergencies
