Hull City defender Semi Ajayi could well start Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs final with Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday after serving out a one-match ban.

The experienced centre-back missed the Super Eagles’ 4-1 victory over the Panthers of Gabon on Thursday due to suspension.

Calvin Bassey paired young defender, Benjamin Fredrick at the heart of the team’s defence in his absence.

Head coach Eric Chelle could now move Fredrick to right-back in place of Bright Osayi-Samuel to allow Ajayi pair Bassey at centre-back.

Ajayi’s experience and calmness will be needed against the robust- playing DRC.

Left-back Zaidu Sanusi is expect to keep his place in the starting line-up.
