Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, has revealed why he was emotional after they beat Egypt 3-2 to qualify for the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday night.
Messi had the chance to make it 1-1 from the penalty spot after Nasser Ibrahim opened the scoring.
But the 39-year-old saw a second penalty at the tournament saved.
Egypt went two goals up as Mostafa Zico finished off a fine counter-attack.
Argentina then scored three late goals from Cristian Romero, Messi and Enzo Fernandez in the second half to win the game.
Speaking after the match, Messi said: “I cried because I felt that I let my teammates down, because of the penalty I missed… and the way I took it.
“But thankfully once again, God had something special for me in the end. I’m very happy.”
