The Interim Management Committee (IMC) has adopted a new name for the Nigerian League.

The top flight will now be known as the Nigeria Premier Football League, a departure from the old Nigeria Professional Football League.

The old name was adopted by the moribund League Management Company (LMC) ahead of the 2012/13 season.

The Nigerian top flight had at different times been known as the Nigerian Premier League, Nigerian Premiership, Nigerian Professional League, Nigerian National League- First Division and the Nigerian Football League.

Meanwhile, former champions, Akwa United will host Bendel Insurance in the opening fixture of the 202/23 NPFL season on Sunday.

The encounter is billed for the magnificent Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

The nine other matchday-one fixtures will take place next weekend.

Rivers United are the reigning champions of the NPFL.
