Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher has expressed surprise that the club went ahead to sign Cody Gakpo from Ajax in the January transfer window.
The former England defender said he does not understand why his former club signed the Netherlands international, who, according to him, is not a typical Jurgen Klopp player.
Garragher noted that the World Cup star will be on the bench when all the other Liverpool forwards are fit.
Gakpo, 23, joined Liverpool from Dutch champions Ajax in January for a fee which could rise to £45m with add-ons.
“i am baffled watching Gakpo’s early performances,” Carragher wrote in The Telegraph.
“Gakpo is not a typical Klopp signing, lacking lightning pace and the capacity to lead a high press.
“Why commit up to £45 million on someone who will be on the bench when Diaz and Diogo Jota are fit?” He added.
Liverpool moved to ninth place in the Premier League on Monday after their 2-0 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby.
Mohamed Salah grabbed Liverpool’s opener, his first goal for the club in 2023, while the criticised Gakpo also netted his very first goal for the Reds.
