Arsenal hero, Robert Pires, has named Antoine Griezmann as the player that should captain the France national team instead of Kylian Mbappe.
Pires said this while hitting out at France’s head coach Didier Deschamps’ decision to hand Mbappe the France captaincy ahead of Griezmann.
He claimed that it shows ‘a lack of respect’ towards Griezmann for Mbappe to captain France, adding that he was surprised.
Mbappe was picked to lead France after goalkeeper Hugo Lloris retired from the national team, with Griezmann, who has picked up 117 caps since making his debut back in 2014 named as his vice-captain.
When asked if he thought Mbappe was the right choice to captain Les Bleus, Pires told L’Equipe: “A logical choice? Honestly, no. Considering the longevity of the years gone by, I was expecting it to be Griezmann who was nominated.
“I’m surprised. It is a lack of respect for Antoine, I find, even if – I insist – I have nothing against Kylian.”
