Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher has slammed Chelsea defender, Marc Cucurella over the role he played in Ben Chilwell’s red card against Real Madrid.

Caragher said the Spanish defender misread the situation that saw the England left-back sent off.

Chelsea were defeated 2-0 in their Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio scoring for the home side.

Chilwell dragged back Real Madrid’s Rodrygo on the edge of the box when the Brazilian was clean through and the referee promptly brandished a red card.

While Carragher was critical of Chilwell’s defending, he slammed Cucurella for offering little help to the England international.

“You can’t do everything you’d like to do as a defender [against rapid players],” he said of Chiwell on CBS Sport.

“When the ball goes and [Rodrygo] spins, Cucurella is still like this [stood still].

“For me, Cucurella is at fault but that [from Chilwell] is even more at fault. Don’t pull someone back and give a red card away!”
