Portugal national team coach Roberto Martinez has told new Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino to make Romelu Lukaku the focal point of his new era at Stamford Bridge.
Lukaku is returning to Stamford Bridge this summer. Describing the striker as a very strong player, his former national team boss, Martinez, insisted the ‘elite’ goalscorer can still be a major asset for the Blues.
The former Everton and Manchester United striker spent the 2022–23 season on loan at Inter Milan, and there is uncertainty over his immediate future at the moment.
Chelsea paid an incredible sum of £97.5 million to bring him to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2021 but loaned him back to the club after he failed to live up to expectations back in west London.
Martinez told talkSPORT: “Every player needs to have outstanding quality, and Romelu is a goalscorer—he can finish with his left, with his right, he is powerful, he can get away from defenders.
“If you look at his numbers in terms of goals, for the national team, he is the highest scorer in their history, highest goalscorer at Everton.”
