Odion Ighalo has expressed disappointment with the inclusion of a few local players in Super Eagles’ provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Only three goalkeepers; Ojo Olorunleke, Amas Obasogie and Christian Nwoke were included in the 41-man list submitted by head coach, Jose Peseiro.
Ighalo claimed that the home-based players deserve more places in the squad.
“I don’t think it’s right not to invite home-based players, this is a 40-man list, at least five to seven players should be on the list to encourage them. Not inviting them means you don’t focus on the league,” Ighalo told Oma Sports.
It remains to be seen if the trio will make the final 27-man squad for the AFCON.
Only one home-based player, John Noble, made the Super Eagles squad to the 2021 AFCON hosted by Cameroon.
