Bayer Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso has expressed his delight following Victor Boniface’s return from injury.

Boniface made his first appearance for Die Werkself in 2024 against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Wednesday night.

The 23-year-old underwent surgery for an adductor injury in January.

The Nigeria international took the place of Patrick Schick in the 66th minute.

Alonso heaped plaudits on the striker and said it was important to have him back on the pitch.

“It was special for him (Boniface) to return after three months out. He worked hard to get back on the pitch. He wanted to enjoy it with the players. We needed him back,” Alonso said after the game.

The striker has so far registered 16 goals and seven assists in 25 appearances across all competitions for Leverkusen this season.
