The Video Assistant Referee, VAR, could not chalk off Chelsea’s second goal against Wolves on Sunday, because of a rule that forbids it from checking restarts.

The Blues thrashed their hosts 6-2 at the Molineux, with Noni Madueke scoring a second-half hat-trick.

Chelsea opened the scoring through Nicolas Jackson, before Matheus Cunha levelled.

Cole Palmer then put the visitors back in front ahead of half, lifting the ball over Jose Sa.

However, Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez had taken his kick from a restart while the ball was still rolling in the build up to the goal.

This should have seen the goal disallowed. But due to the goal not breaking any of the official rules needed for a VAR review, it was not checked.

VAR protocol requires checks of goals that shouldn’t stand or a goal that wasn’t awarded, penalty decisions, red cards or mistaken identity.
