Gynaecologists have expressed serious concern over a disturbing case in Anambra State, where an 18-year-old boy allegedly impregnated 10 girls in just five months.
While the situation is biologically possible, reproductive health experts have labeled it as “unusual,” pointing to deeper issues that could be influencing the teenager’s behavior.
The teenager, who is said to be an apprentice in the state, is currently under investigation by the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare after reportedly impregnating multiple girls including his master’s daughter and a salesgirl.
The case has triggered alarm over adolescent sexual behavior, with some experts suspecting there’s more to the story than meets the eye.
Speaking to PUNCH Healthwise, Professor Chris Aimakhu, a respected Obstetrics and Gynaecology professor at the University of Ibadan, said that while the teen’s actions are biologically possible, the circumstances are deeply troubling.
“For 10 women to accept to sleep with an 18-year-old apprentice who has little or nothing to offer, something is wrong. This may go beyond mere youthful behavior,” Aimakhu said.
He warned that the teenager might be exploited by a baby factory network operating in the region.
“We are aware of the existence of baby factories in parts of the East. If this boy is being used because of his age and potency, there is a need for a thorough investigation,” he added.
Professor Aimakhu also called for DNA tests to verify paternity and to rule out the possibility that the boy is being exploited in a coordinated scheme.
“Not all women who sleep with a man get pregnant. If he impregnated 10, he might have slept with up to 20. There’s also the issue of paternity. Some of these girls could have had multiple partners,” he explained.
Dr. Joseph Akinde, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, also commented on the case.
He raised the possibility that the teen may be suffering from hypersexuality – a rare mental health disorder characterized by an unusually high and uncontrollable sex drive.
He emphasized that although rare, hypersexuality is real and needs medical attention.
“It’s a mental disorder, but it’s not common. His libido is unduly high. He’s fully mature, and there’s nothing spiritual about it,” he added.
One of the most disturbing aspects of the case is the alleged pregnancy of a 10-year-old girl reportedly the apprentice’s master’s daughter.
Dr. Akinde explained that while early puberty (known as precocious puberty) is becoming more common, it does not mean young girls are mentally or emotionally ready for sexual activity.
“We are beginning to see girls even as early as nine attain puberty. If a girl starts menstruating before 10, there is nothing that stops her from getting pregnant if exposed to unprotected sex,” he said.
He also stressed the need for early sexual education both for children and their parents to help them understand the dangers and consequences of early sexual activity.
“If you are a father or mother of such a child, you need to provide sexual education and let her know the dangers of having sex and its consequences,” Dr. Akinde advised.
