Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has reportedly identified Julián Álvarez as his number one target to lead the club’s frontline next season. With a new era beginning under Flick’s guidance, the German tactician has made it clear to the club’s sporting director Deco and president Joan Laporta that the Argentine forward is central to his vision for the team’s attack.

Barcelona’s pursuit of a dynamic striker has led them to assess a wide range of elite names in recent months. From Erling Haaland and Marcus Rashford to Nico Williams and Alexander Isak, the Catalans have evaluated several options in hopes of rejuvenating their attacking threat. Yet, according to close sources at the club, Flick’s heart is set on Álvarez, whose versatility and intelligence on the pitch make him the ideal modern striker for the Blaugrana.

“He’s the player I really want. I believe he can shine in La Liga, and both the board and I are determined to bring him in,” Flick reportedly told Deco during a recent recruitment meeting. These words demonstrate Flick’s hands-on approach to squad building, and his strong desire to build an attack that fits his pressing and possession-based style.

Julián Álvarez, currently a key figure at Manchester City, has already shown his credentials at both club and international level. A World Cup winner with Argentina, Álvarez boasts impressive numbers and tactical flexibility, having played as a centre-forward, second striker, and even out wide under Pep Guardiola. His ability to combine quick link-up play with lethal finishing makes him a well-rounded forward suited for La Liga’s technical demands.

Although Robert Lewandowski remains Barcelona’s first-choice striker at the moment, his advancing age and declining pace have raised questions about his long-term role. Flick sees Álvarez not just as a successor, but as someone who can make an immediate impact alongside or instead of the Polish veteran. The idea is to slowly shift the attacking dependency to a younger and more mobile frontman.

Securing Álvarez, however, won’t be easy. Manchester City reportedly value the 24-year-old highly and have placed a substantial release clause in his contract—believed to be around €150 million. While Barcelona may not be ready to trigger such a clause outright, internal discussions suggest they are exploring structured payment options or player-plus-cash deals to bring the cost down.

Flick and Laporta are said to be aligned on the idea of prioritizing Álvarez, even if it means holding off on other signings or selling fringe players. There’s a growing feeling that building around a young, proven striker like Álvarez is smarter than gambling on an ageing superstar or a player without experience in Europe’s top competitions.

Meanwhile, other striker targets remain on standby. Marcus Rashford has shown interest in a potential Camp Nou switch, especially with the opportunity to reunite with Flick, who managed him briefly in youth friendlies. Reports suggest Rashford is even willing to lower his salary demands to facilitate the move. Similarly, Nico Williams, Jeremy Doku, and Ademola Lookman are being monitored as alternatives, particularly if a move for Luis Díaz fails to materialize.

However, the pursuit of Álvarez signals a shift in Barcelona’s recruitment philosophy. Rather than chasing the biggest names or the flashiest attackers, Flick appears determined to bring in players with tactical discipline, youth, and adaptability. It’s a long-term vision—one that could bring stability and consistency to a club that has struggled for identity in recent seasons.

Interestingly, despite admiration for Erling Haaland, the club is aware that the Norwegian’s price tag, image rights, and agent fees make a move unrealistic in the short term. Haaland remains a dream target, but Álvarez represents a far more achievable and practical signing within the current financial framework.

In conclusion, Hansi Flick’s preference for Julián Álvarez is more than just a transfer wish—it’s a statement of intent. Barcelona wants to build for the future, and in Álvarez, they see a player capable of leading their next golden generation. If the club can pull off this signing, it could mark the beginning of a new, exciting chapter at the Camp Nou.
