Nearly three decades after his split from Halle Berry, her first ex-husband, David Justice, says therapy might have saved their marriage.
Speaking on Matt Barnes’ All the Smoke podcast, the former baseball star reflected on their relationship and admitted his mindset at the time contributed to the breakdown. Justice revealed he questioned whether the “Monster’s Ball” actress was “motherly” enough to have children with him, citing her not cooking, cleaning, or showing traits he associated with motherhood.

“At that time, as a young guy, she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like motherly, and then we start having issues,” he said. Justice added that his perspective was shaped by inexperience and by comparing Berry to his own mother. He also noted that their busy work schedules, which kept them apart for long periods, made matters worse.
Berry and Justice married in 1993 and divorced in 1996. Both have since remarried and divorced. Berry wed singer and actor Eric Benét in 2001, splitting in 2005, and later married French actor Olivier Martinez in 2013 before separating two years later. Their divorce was finalized in 2023. She has been in a relationship with musician Van Hunt since 2020.
Justice has been married to Rebecca Villalobos since 2001.
