Real Madrid manager, Xabi Alonso has explained why he benched winger, Vinicius Junior against Marseille.

Alonso watched as Real Madrid defeated Marseille 2-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The Spaniard opted to start Rodrygo ahead of Vinicius against the French Ligue 1 side.

Vinicius came off the bench to replace his fellow Brazilian team-mate in the second half of the encounter.

However, two penalty goals from Kylian Mbappe gave the Los Blancos the victory against the visitors.

Speaking after the game, Alonso was asked why Vinicius was benched against Marseille.

The Real Madrid coach said at his post-match interview after the game, “We’re at a demanding point in the calendar and we need everyone.

“Everyone will get their moment, and the important thing is that everyone feels prepared and important, because they are, and they will be throughout the season.”
