Former Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho, is set to return to the Champions League as talks are in advance stage for him to join Benfica.
Benfica sacked their manager Bruno Lage on Tuesday night following their Champions League defeat to Qarabag.
The Portuguese team took an early 2-0 lead in the game but allowed their visitors to fight back and won the game.
The manager was sacked just hours after the surprise 3-2 home defeat.
Lage, in his one year as Benfica boss, guided them to the Portuguese League Cup and a second-place finish last season.
Benfica’s president, Rui Costa told the press early Wednesday morning that it was necessary to change the head coach.
“Today we reached an agreement with Bruno Lage to step down as Benfica’s coach… we believe it’s time for a change,” Rui Costa said.
“Regarding the next coach, we expect to have the new one on the bench at Vila das Aves next Saturday.
“The Benfica coach must be a winner. We won’t talk about names”
NEWSUNPLUG reported that Turkish side, Fenerbahce, recently sacked Mourinho after they were beaten by Benfica in their Champions League play-off.
Mourinho started his managerial career at Benfica in 2000 but resigned at the early stage with the club following a disagreement with the club’s then-president Manuel Vilarinho.
Metro reports that Benfica have already begun negotiations with Mourinho to return to the club.
According to the report, the former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Roma, and Tottenham boss, 62, will be appointed before Benfica’s next league game against AVS on Saturday.
