Liverpool are ready for one of their toughest nights of the season as they lock horns with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Manager Arne Slot has confirmed his starting eleven, and while the line-up looks strong on paper, there is one glaring absence that has left fans talking: Curtis Jones is missing once again.

The midfield dynamo, who has been struggling with a fitness issue, failed to recover in time and has not even been named among the substitutes. His absence means Liverpool must shuffle their options in the middle of the park, with Slot turning to a slightly different combination to balance creativity and control against Diego Simeone’s aggressive side.

In goal, as expected, Alisson Becker retains his spot. The Brazilian remains a cornerstone of Liverpool’s defensive structure, and his ability to produce game-saving stops will be crucial against Atletico’s counterattacking threats. Facing Simeone’s side without a reliable shot-stopper would be a nightmare, but Alisson’s presence offers some much-needed assurance.

At the back, Jeremie Frimpong lines up at right-back, bringing pace and energy down the flank. On the opposite side, Andy Robertson slots in at left-back, offering his trademark overlaps and relentless pressing. The central pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté provides both physicality and composure, ensuring Liverpool can handle the aerial threat posed by Atletico’s forwards.

In midfield, Slot has gone with Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai as the double pivot. Both players will need to be disciplined without the ball, but also brave enough to carry it forward when spaces open up. Szoboszlai, in particular, will be tasked with progressing play and linking with the front four, while Gravenberch offers a strong presence in duels.

Agency Further forward, Liverpool’s attacking midfield trio looks packed with flair and dynamism. Mohamed Salah takes his usual role on the right wing, where he will be the primary threat cutting inside onto his left foot. On the left, Cody Gakpo gets the nod ahead of Luis Díaz, with his movement and pressing ability expected to be vital in pinning Atletico’s full-backs deep.

The creative spark through the middle comes from Florian Wirtz, the young German playmaker who has quickly adapted to life under Slot. Wirtz will be tasked with unlocking Atletico’s notoriously stubborn defensive lines, threading passes into dangerous areas, and supporting the striker.

Leading the line is Hugo Ekitiké, who has steadily grown into his role at Anfield. While not as prolific as some of Liverpool’s past number nines, his work rate and link-up play provide a new dimension. Tonight, he faces a massive test against the rugged Atletico defense led by José María Giménez.

The big talking point, however, remains Curtis Jones. His absence deprives Liverpool of a homegrown talent who thrives in European nights with his energy, composure, and ability to dictate tempo. Slot will hope that the midfield reshuffle can compensate for what Jones usually brings, but against an opponent as disciplined as Atletico, the gap could be felt.

Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, arrive in confident mood. Diego Simeone has already made headlines by praising Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo as “extraordinary,” but he will also have his team primed to frustrate the Reds and hit them on the break. History has shown that Atletico are one of the few sides who relish battles against English giants, and tonight will be no different.

With the confirmed line-up now in place, Liverpool supporters will be eager to see how the team responds to the challenge. Can the Reds find the balance between attack and control without Curtis Jones? Or will Simeone’s men exploit the gaps left by his absence? One thing is certain: under the Anfield lights, another unforgettable Champions League clash is about to unfold.
