France has now matched Argentina’s record of countries with the highest number of Ballon d’Or awards won.

This comes after Paris Saint-Germain forward, Osumane Dembele won the 2025 Ballon d’Or edition ahead of Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal on Monday night in Paris.

Before the France international’s triumph, Argentina holds the record for the most Ballon d’Or wins with 8, which was all achieved by their captain, Lionel Messi.

However, France has now tied Argentina with 8 total wins too.

They achieved this through more individual players, with wins from six players, including Michel Platini, Zinédine Zidane, Karim Benzema, and Dembele.

The likes of Germany, the Netherlands, and Portugal are tied for third place with 7 wins each.

Countries with the highest number of Ballon d’Or wins after Dembele’s triumph:

Argentina – 8
France – 8
Germany – 7
Netherlands – 7
Portugal – 7 (including Cristiano Ronaldo’s five wins)
Italy – 5
Brazil – 5
England – 5
