Police arrest Army personnel for faking own kidnap and demanding N20 million ransom

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a serving soldier for allegedly f@king his kidnap in a bid to extort N20 million from his family.

The suspect identified as 38-year-old Samuel Ekezie, a personnel of the 302 Artillery Regiment of the Nigerian Army, Onitsha, was apprehended on the evening of September 15, 2025, and taken into custody.

In a statement released, the command’s spokesperson, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, said the suspect allegedly staged his abduction to obtain money from his relatives.

Tochukwu mentioned that preliminary investigations revealed that on August 15, 2025, Ekezie sent a text message to his family claiming he had been kidnapped and demanding a ransom of N20 million for his release.

SP Tochukwu further disclosed that, acting on technology-driven intelligence, operatives tracked and arrested the suspect at his hideout in Rivers State.

He added that the command assures the public of a thorough investigation into the matter, stating its commitment to ensuring justice is served.
