The fitness of Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface has been a major issue for the Nigerian in the past few months as he risks not being selected for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Boniface, who is currently on loan at Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, has not been able to break into the first team because of his fitness. According to the club’s sporting director Clemens Fritz, he confirmed that both parties have identified the problem and are ready to find a solution.
He said,
“We have clearly identified the issues together with Victor and are supporting him in every way possible. He accepts our support and wants to work on himself, with extra training, physiotherapy, and a modified nutrition plan. We’re working closely with him.”
The striker led Bayer Leverkusen to the league title in 2024, scoring 21 goals and providing 10 assists in 34 official matches. The following season, his numbers dipped somewhat, but he remained important, scoring 11 goals in 27 matches.
With the departure of Alonso in the summer, the exit of Boniface was inevitable, but his transfer did not go as easily as expected after he failed his medical at AC Milan after a deal was agreed.
Boniface hopes he can get back to his form so he can be selected to represent Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations in December 2025.
