Nigerian rapper Erigga has shared his thoughts on the changing dynamics of love and relationships, claiming that the rise of internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys, has damaged the culture of genuine romance in the country.

In an interview on Yanga FM Lagos, the Warri-born artist said that the lavish lifestyle displayed by Yahoo boys has influenced the way many people view relationships today. He explained that their constant show of wealth has created unrealistic expectations that regular men cannot meet.

According to him, the pressure to impress with money has made true emotional connection rare.

He said:

“Yahoo boys don kill romance. Real romance no really dey again. When last you see lovers just walk hand in hand for street? It don tey. The issue be say we are raising men who think their value is only in the amount of money they have.”

Reflecting on the past, Erigga noted that dating used to be simple, meaningful, and sincere, with couples appreciating small gestures and shared moments rather than material gifts.

He continued:

“Relationships are now expensive. Before, meat pie and one bottle of Fanta from Mr Biggs was enough, and girls appreciated it. But men also contributed to this problem weak men allowed money to become the measurement of love, and then women raised the standard.”

Erigga added that the trend of flaunting wealth just to attract affection has destroyed the authenticity that once existed between partners. He emphasized that men need to focus on offering emotional support, communication, humor, and genuine connection not just money.

His words:

“Love no be by money alone. Emotional intelligence, humor, deep conversation na those things connect people. Not just throwing cash.”

He also encouraged women to value men beyond their financial capacity, urging both sides to return to relationships built on connection rather than material gain.

@Xwarriorxs:”Everyone will realize what the king has been going through no be today tech bros enter industry it’s just being obvious cause then dem still dy buy air plays”

@skythetopdawg:”Na wetin make shallipopi talk say if he even sing nursery rhymes una go still stream and.”
