EPL: Liverpool Contact PGMOL Over Van Dijk’s Disallowed Goal Against Man City

Liverpool have contacted the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, PGMOL, to express their concerns about the decision to disallow Virgil van Dijk’s goal against Manchester City on Sunday.

The Reds were thrashed 3-0 by City at the Etihad, a result that put a huge dent on their title defence.

However, they told they had made it 1-1 following Erling Haaland’s goal, but Van Dijk’s header from a corner kick was ruled out in the first half.

The linesman deemed that Andy Robertson, who was standing in an offside position, blocked the vision of Gianluigi Donnarumma in the City goal.

VAR Michael Oliver then backed up the on-field decision.

The Premier League match centre said in a post on X that Robertson had been “deemed to be making an obvious action directly in front of the goalkeeper.”

ESPN reports that Liverpool believe the wording of Law 11 (which deals with offside offences) is clear, and argue that no elements of the criteria needed to disallow the goal were met.

After analysing all available angles, the club do not accept that Donnarumma’s vision was impeded by Robertson’s presence.
