Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong has reflected on Victor Osimhen’s missed chance in the closing stages of the team’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs against Gabon.

Osimhen missed a sitter after he was set up by a superb pass from Wilfred Ndidi.

The Galatasaray striker’s failure to convert the chance sent the game into extra time.

The 26-year-old, however, scored twice in extra time to help Nigeria secure a 4-1 win.

Troost-Ekong said they encouraged the forward to keep going at the end of 90 minutes.

“When I saw him running at the goalkeeper, I was sure he was going to score but after that we tried to encourage him and tried to make sure he wasn’t disheartened,” he told ESPN Africa.

Samuel Chukwueze also reflected on the miss by Osimhen.

“But it’s football sometimes it happens, everybody knows he can score that kind of goal and he gave us two goals and it’s fantastic,” Chukwueze said.
