What Is Next For The Super Eagles Of Nigeria After The World Cup Playoffs Exit?

The Super Eagles’ World Cup dreams came to a heartbreaking end as Nigeria stumbled out of the playoff race dramatically to DR Congo on penalties.

This was expected to be a defining moment for the team instead turned into a night of frustration, missed opportunities, and bitter disappointment for millions of fans. Their elimination not only ends hopes of reaching the global showpiece but also raises serious questions about the team’s direction, preparation, and future under pressure.

However despite the disappointment the next step is necessary for the Super Eagles going forward as they prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

(1) Focus on AFCON:

The Super Eagles cannot afford another disappointing performance like their last appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations, where they lost the final to the host nation, the Ivory Coast.

The last thing the Super Eagles need is any distraction; careful and proper preparation is essential with less than five weeks until the competition. The NFF must fully support the coaching staff by organising top-quality friendlies to prepare the team.

(2) Early preparation for the 2030 World Cup:

The 2030 World Cup is a major event for FIFA, as it will mark its centenary, which began in 1930 with the first tournament held in Uruguay.

The NFF should start seeking a replacement for Eric Chelle, regardless of the outcome of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Super Eagles cannot advance or succeed on the big stage with Chelle in charge.

They need to bring in a top-class coach who will be given clear directives on the team’s expectations and the desired direction—covering the qualifiers, the next two AFCON tournaments, and ultimately the 2030 World Cup.

(3) Begin early scouting for key positions within the Super Eagles:

A large portion of the current squad is in their late 20s, meaning they will be in their mid-30s by the next World Cup. This should be a key criterion for those responsible for scouting players. It is vital to start early by integrating more young players, aiming to build a team that combines youth and experience—both of which are essential for success in any football team, as a blend of the two is always crucial.
