Democratic Republic of Congo head coach, Sébastien Desabre has singled out two Super Eagles players following his side’s hard-earned win over the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
Recall that the Leopards defeated Nigeria 4-3 on penalties in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs in Morocco on Sunday night.
Frank Onyeka and Meschack Elia scored the goals for both countries as the match ended in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.
Speaking to reporters after the match in Rabat, Desabre singled out Super Eagles duo Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze for their display against DR Congo, insisting that the wingers often dropped inside during the encounter.
Reflecting on his side’s outing during the playoffs, Desabre told reporters in Rabat: “Cameroon with a typical system and Nigeria with a sort of diamond shape, where Lookman and Chukwueze often dropped back inside.
“They [Nigeria] changed their system a bit during the match. We stayed in the same system, changing the pressing.”
DR Congo will now represent Africa in the intercontinental playoffs, taking place next year.
