Reno Omokri, a well-known supporter of President Bola Tinubu, has taken a swipe at Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following Obi’s recent comments on Nigeria’s growing insecurity crisis.
Obi had shared a post on X titled “Is Nigeria cursed or are we the curse?”, where he voiced concern over the rising wave of kidnappings across the country, including cases involving schoolchildren.
Responding to the post, Omokri dismissed Obi’s suggestion that Nigeria might be under a curse. He questioned why a former presidential candidate would describe the country in such bleak terms.
In a detailed response on X, Omokri wrote:
“Nigeria Is Not Cursed, As Peter Obi Claims! Dear Peter Obi, Nigeria is not cursed. How can you even say that? So you want to govern a cursed nation? This is 2025. Emancipate your mind from superstition.”
Omokri argued that curses have no influence on national challenges. He claimed that if they did, Obi would have been affected by what he described as the resentment of some Anambra residents who accuse him of underperformance during his eight-year tenure as governor.
He added:
“Curses do not work. If they do, all the curses piled on you by the people of Anambra for the eight years that you misgoverned them…”
Omokri went on to repeat previous accusations that Obi prioritized private business interests and breweries instead of investing in public education.
According to him, Nigeria’s recent security setbacks have nothing to do with curses but rather with individuals he described as “terrorists’ enablers.”
He further accused Obi of allegedly supporting Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), whose trial and conviction have stirred nationwide reactions.
Omokri argued that insecurity persists when influential figures publicly back groups accused of violent activities. He noted that although Obi once condemned the killing of soldiers in Abia State, he has also repeatedly said that IPOB members are not terrorists. He challenged Obi to clarify whether he still stands by that statement.
Wrapping up his response, Omokri blamed Nigeria’s insecurity on what he called the “double standards” of some leaders, whom he believes embolden violent groups. He added that if Obi truly wants to understand the roots of the country’s security problems, he should “look in the mirror.”
