Former Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor has reaffirmed his Yoruba heritage. Adebayor made the affirmation in a video that has gone viral on social media.
During his active years, the Togolese forward played for the two north London top clubs, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, becoming the first African to do so.
Adebayor also featured for Real Madrid.
He scored 104 goals and made 35 assists in 255 games for Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking in fluent Yoruba in a video shared on X by BBC Sport journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, Adebayor said, “Oluwalosheyi Emmanuel Adebayor, that’s me, the son of the King.
“I know who I am and where I am from. I can’t deny my origin. I am Yoruba.”
Adebayor was born to Adeyi Adebayor and Alice Adekanye in Lomé and went on to play for the Togolese national team.
