Nigerian dancer Korra Obidi has stirred public debate after posting a video of herself twerking at the gravesite of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, calling the dance a tribute to the late icon.
Korra Obidi shared the video on Instagram, explaining that the unconventional performance was her way of honoring Fela, whom she noted was known for appreciating expressive and energetic dance.
“We all know that one thing Fela loved was a woman with gyrating hips, so I decided to pay Baba a homage. I decided to shake my ny@sh for Baba. Seun was very happy. He said you guys know what Baba likes but you’ve never given him. Baba this is a little twerk for you. Your legacy lives on, we love you,” she said.
The dancer’s tribute has since sparked mixed reactions online regarding the appropriate way to honor cultural icons.
