Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has sparked fresh controversy online following a fiery statement directed at fans of Nigerian music star Wizkid, popularly known as Wizkid FC.
In the strongly worded remark, Seun Kuti criticised comparisons between Wizkid and his late father, Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, describing such claims as disrespectful and misleading. According to Seun, attempts by some fans to portray Wizkid as the “new Fela” amount to an appropriation of Fela’s image and legacy.
Seun accused Wizkid’s fanbase of deliberately pushing a false narrative and warned them to stop mentioning Fela’s name in such contexts. He stressed that Fela’s cultural, political, and musical impact cannot be replicated or rebranded through modern pop stardom.
In his words:
“Wizkid fc needs to keep Fela’s name out of their mouth. You people try to steal the man image. You try to claim your fake artiste is the new Fela. It’s an insult to Fela to call Wizkid the new Fela. Wizkid fc are the most !gn0 rãnt fanbase in the world.”
The statement has since ignited heated reactions across social media, with some users backing Seun Kuti’s defence of his father’s legacy, while others accused him of unnecessary hostility and disrespect toward Wizkid’s achievements.
