Nollywood producer Stanley Ontop has caused a stir online after calling out Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey regarding an alleged family issue involving his father.
The comments surfaced during discussions on social media, where some Nigerians attempted to categorize Super Eagles players based on their ethnic background, especially those from the Igbo tribe.
In an Instagram post, Stanley questioned Bassey’s state of origin and surname, pointing to apparent confusion over the footballer’s identity. He wrote:
“Calvin Bassey na Anambra boy or Akwa Ibom boy? How this fine boy go yank him papa name from him name and put him grandmother’s surname, Bassey? Who is Bassey? Who is Calvin? Who is Ughelumba? Who is Kingsley Ikenna Ughelumba.”
He further alleged that Bassey replaced his father’s surname with his grandmother’s, which he deemed culturally inappropriate. According to Stanley, Calvin’s biological father is Mr. Kingsley Ikenna Ughelumba, who has reportedly been estranged from his children for years.
Stanley advised Bassey and his siblings to reconcile with their father, calling him their “real father” and urging forgiveness. He added that the man has lived in Italy for over 25 years and has struggled with depression.
The producer also stated that Bassey’s mother had a formal marriage with the full bride price paid, insisting that Calvin should acknowledge his roots in Ihiala, Anambra State, rather than Akwa Ibom. He described the situation as a “sacrilege” that brought shame to the family and community.
Stanley additionally claimed that Bassey’s father traveled to Abidjan last year to see his son but was denied access at the stadium. He wrote:
“It’s a shame to ur kindred and community Ur dad had to travel all the way to abijan last year to see you Buh you turned him down at the stadium. I wish you luck our defender.”
As of this report, Calvin Bassey has not responded publicly to the allegations.
