Social media commentator VeryDarkMan has criticised Afrobeats singer Wizkid over his recent remarks likening himself to late Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Reacting to the comparison, VeryDarkMan claimed Wizkid does not possess the level of originality that defined Fela or even his sons, Femi and Seun Kuti. He questioned the singer’s creative depth, particularly on stage, alleging that Wizkid relies heavily on backing tracks rather than delivering live performances.
The critic further alleged that Wizkid’s rise to fame was driven largely by sampling already existing songs. He claimed that Wizkid’s breakout track, “Holla at Your Boy,” drew inspiration from earlier records and argued that several songs from the artist’s debut era lacked complete originality.
According to VeryDarkMan, placing Wizkid in the same conversation as Fela is inappropriate, noting that Fela’s legacy was built on originality, strong political messaging, and powerful live performances qualities he believes Wizkid does not reflect in the same manner.
